![]() Saturday the 7th of March saw the first kata practice session of 2015 for the IKK. It was held in Mullingar dojo and run by Sensei Jon Maher. It was a three hour session that seemed like only 1 hour for the seniors and perhaps an eternity for the juniors. However they kept their spirits up, soldiered on and in true Kyokushin spirit never gave up. Everybody had a chance to learn new kata's and practice their learned ones. It was a good manageable turnout with members from Minamigawa Dojo, Mullingar dojo, Galway Dojo and Westport Dojo. It was great to see the return to training of Ciara Heneghan from Westport Dojo. The juniors were given a opportunity to learn Saiha Kata at the end of the session. Naturals!! The format of the session was to work on 10th Kyu all the way to Shodan kata's with emphasis on hip movement, head movement and transition of stances. It was extremely productive to everyone and it is always great to see smiles during and after a session. Before we knew it the time had run out and we really only scratched the surface. None the less, progress was made and every victory adds purpose to the goal. Many thanks to the parents of the students who travelled to Mullingar and waited patiently while their child was training. Without this dedication we cannot have these sessions and although some of the parents don't wear dogi's, they are considered Kyokushin by all our instructors. Many thanks to Sensei Ken for organising the dojo. The IKK will have the next kata session in April. Date, venue and time will be given in due course. Osu! Sensei Jon Osu
Sensei Jon Maher will be holding the first kata session of 2015 in Mullingar dojo on the 7th of March from 1pm to 4pm. The cost for this session will be €7 per person. The first two hours will be spent focusing on 10th kyu to shodan. The last hour will be spent working on Nidan katas only. All are welcome to participate in the third hour but be aware that all concentration will be with black belts. It doesn't matter if you know the katas or not. Time will be spent going through the katas giving time for people to pick them up. Osu Jon
Wiktor Lesiak also in his second tournament fought through to the semi finals of the Novice Mens Middleweights category. He lost by decision to Blake Collins of England but won the 3rd place fight off giving him a well deserved 3rd place.
Also in the Novice Mens Middleweights was Johnathan Glennon in his third tournament. He fought his was through to the final where he came up against Blake Collins. The final was the best fight of the day going through rounds with Blake Collins emerging victorius leaving Johnathan with second place. The IKKU who hosted the tournament also awarded Johnathan Glennon the Most Spirited fighter award. Another good day for the IKK. Shane The IKK is sending four fighters to the forthcoming Scottish Open in Glasgow on Saturday 21st February. The fighters are as follows:

The British Karate Kyokushinkai held their open tournament on 10th October 2014. As ever the IKK sent over a team of fighters. This years team was a mix of experience and newcomers across the different categories. Also travelling with the fighters as Coaches were Ken Fitzpatrick and Shane Mulhall. The IKK also sent two of its most experienced referees - Jon Maher and Shane Lalor. In the Novice Category we had Emilia Cahill fighting in her last Novice event before moving up to the Open category. Emilia fought very well over 3 fights narrowly losing out on top spot by decision. A worthy Second Place. In the mens Novice Middleweight event we had Wiktor Lesiak in his first run out. Wiktor fought well in the first round before losing by decision in the second round. In the mens Novice Heavyweight Category we had three fighters - Frank Reid, Seweryn Lesiak and Ian Corcoran - all first timers. Unfortunately Frank was stopped in the first round. Ian and Seweryn fought their way through the Draw to meet each other in the final with Seweryn a worthy winner. Another second place and now also a First as well. In the Mens Open Heavyweights experienced campaigners Alan McCoy and Dave King took to the mats once again. Sadly both lost in the Opening round but both gained valuable experience. In the Ladies open Heavyweights we had Aneta Meskauskiene who won easily in the first round but lost by decision in the next round. Last up we had Shauna Arthur in the cadet category. Despite being the youngest competitor at only 16 she fought with a confidence and maturity far beyond those years and was a worthy winner of the cadet girls title. At the end of the day we returned home more experienced and with two Second place and two first place trophies. Another good haul for the IKK. Shane |
