This used to be Jodan Mawashi Geri but as I get older I find that I prefer Gedan Mawashi geri. This technique seems to sum up the princple of Kyokushin being "not pretty but effective" better than any other. |
| Best Advice Received: |
When I was going for my Shodan, Sensei Kevin told me that you can fool everyone but yourself. This was somewhat of a turning point for me as I realised that up to that point I had been fooling myself and this helped me to focus and be successful in that grading. |
| Martial Arts Likes: |
Respect and perseverance. The friendships that I have built though Kyokushin. The feeling you get after a really hard session - it falls between tiredness and euphoria. |
| Martial Arts Dislikes: |
Lack of commitment. |
| Best Martial Arts Memory: |
Training in Mountjoy Square dojo with the roof leaking and it being colder inside than out. All the summer camps. Achieving my shodan. My own Student Chris Walsh achieving his Shodan - he came to me as a begginner and graded all the way through with me as his instructor. Winning a knockdown event. Receiving the Spirit of Achievement award from Shihan Liam -this award is dedicated to the memory of his father who had just passed away. The most emotional memory for me was attempting, unsuccessfully, the 20 man Kumite on Summer camp in 1996. Sensei Kevin trained me for this so hard and he never let up on me and I just remember the emotion on the faces of the fighters that day and Sensei Kevins words after - "you did your best". |
