Now, since I am back, from Russia (KWU World Championship), UK (39th British Open and 7th Incorporating Cup of Europe) and finally from my well deserved week’s break in Lithuania, I have some time to think about all my recent events and  can share some of my thoughts about them:At the beginning of October, along with another Irish fighter David King I had opportunity to represent Ireland (sponsored by Accenture) in the second Kyokushin World Union (KWU) World Championship in Khabarovsk, Russia. This is the second time in the history of this sport that 250 of the strongest competitors in the world, representing 46 countries, 10 of the largest international Kyokushin organizations, fought together on the one mat, in one tournament. The championship was organized at very high standards lasting 2 days. Overall I were awarded 3rd place.

3rd place is not the result that I was dreaming of, but I was honoured standing on the podium receiving recognition with the other winners. The lesson I learned is that no matter how hard you try at something, how much energy you put in and how much you wish for it to happen, it doesn't always happen the way you plan. But the challenge is the opportunity to test yourself, to analyse yourself and then - work on your mistakes. Glory is not a forever lasting process, there is lots of work and pain hidden under those shiny trophies, and not only of those who receiving them.

Just 2 weeks after the world tournament (on 17/10/2015), I successfully represented Ireland in 39th British Open Championship (Incorporating Cup of Europe) and won first place. I am very pleased to know, that I am the first Irish female fighter to bring home gold from this tournament, and the second gold winner in Irish Karate’s 50 year history (Sensei Ken Fitzpatrick won his champion’s title in 1998). It was great day.

I am very grateful to all my coaches: Sensei Shane Mulhall (taking most stressful role - being National Squad Coach), Shihan Kevin Callan (with his very inspiring speeches and support), Dave Hedges (who is responsible for the pain, which my opponents receiving from me, during the fights - that is his fault :), Sensei wShane Lalor for his amazing organising skills) . They all put lot’s of effort and  time, lots’ of strength, speed, endurance, power and, most important confidence into me. To my sparring and training partners (from Kokoro MMA Dublin & North Strand Dojo , Finglas Dojo, Swords Dojo and Killester Dojo) - who were collecting bruises and injuries while I was training! To  my colleagues who took on extra work during my absence, and to my sponsors Accenture (high performance was delivered) I am proud to be part of Accenture and proud to wear the name on my suit! For Ratoath Inn (the place where I will celebrate my victories and important life events) The sponsorship which I received, helped me to prepare and compete, without taking it from my family. And this really means world to me.

And last but not least, I'd like to thank my family members for their continued support and encouragement: to my dad Viktoras Rudys for his support, to my mum Tatjana Rudiene - you are my example, you are my Hero! To Gytis Meskauskas, who is my husband, main training partner, coach, daddy for our 2 wonderful boys and for believing in myself more than I do! Domo Arigato!

Regards,
Aneta

The Inaugural Wales Vs Ireland tournament was held on Saturday June 6th 2015. We sent over a team of five Junior Clicker fighters, 1 Cadet and 11 Senior knockdown fighters. These 17 fighters were joined by a large group of supporters.

Also traveling were the Junior Coach Senpai Dave King, Senior Coaches Sensei Ken Fitzpatrick and Senpai Ciaran Stapleton, Referees Sensei Shane Lalor and Sensei Jon Maher. Last but by no means least was Shihan Kevin Callan our Chief Instructor and Country Representative.

Our day started in Dublin airport and after a short flight to Bristol we were picked up by a coach and began our Journey to Cardiff. We arrived with an hour to spare and got ourselves sorted. The tournament was due to start at 6.30 and right on time Shihan Terry Prescott began the Introductory speeches. After this the fighting started.

First up was the Junior clicker which set the tone for the rest of the night. After 5 hard fought fights Wales were victorious on a scoreline of 3.5 to 1.5. Well done to both sets of fighters for setting an example to all.

This was followed by the Knockdown fights. The atmosphere was electric with both sets of supporters trying to out do each other. These fights were match ups with fighters hand picked to fight each other. They were very well matched up as could be seen by the fact that almost all the fights went the distance. In the end Wales ran out winners by a scoreline of 7-5.

All that was left was the after party and that alone could be the topic of another article - but wont be :)

It was a fantastic event and special mention should go to Sensei Kevin Wells and Sensei Roger Styles for organising it so well. We look forward to 2016 and the rematch. The wheels are already in motion.

Three fighters and one Coach from IKK represented at recent BKK English Open.  Sean Murtagh from Mullingar Dojo was first fight of the Tournament day in M/W Novice and fought very well for only his second outing against a more experienced Welsh Fighter.  The fight went 2 rounds and unfortunately Sean had 2 flags against him and the ref. went with his opponent.  Sean will fight in Wales in a few weeks.

Miroslaw Wierzbinski from Mullingar fought in Novice L/W and was also up against a more experienced English fighter.  Miroslaw fought well for his first ever time at Knockdown and got some nice jodan kicks in.  Unfortunately experience told and the English fighter got the decision after the first round.  This fighter went on to win the eventual Tournament.

Aneta Meskauskiene from Killester Dojo fought Emma Markwell in the Open Women’s H/W final as there were just 2 entries in this division.  The first round in the final was 3 mins and both girls fought really well neither giving way.  Another 2 rounds of 2 mins each was battled out and a split decision was called with Emma gaining the referee’s vote.  Aneta fought brilliantly and it could have gone either way.  Technique and fighting spirit was excellent from both fighters.

The IKK had a successful visit to the IKKU Scottish Open Knockdown tournament in Glasgow on Saturday 21st February 2015.

We had four fighters in different categories. Senpai Aneta Meskauskiene was competing in the Ladies Openweight category where she lost by decision after 2 rounds.

Seweryn Lesiak in his second tournament fought in the Novice Mens Heavyweights. As he did in his first time out he fought through to the final. This time though he had to settle for second place losing to
Frederik Gade of Denmark.

Wiktor Lesiak also in his second tournament fought through to the semi finals of the Novice Mens Middleweights category. He lost by decision to Blake Collins of England but won the 3rd place fight off giving him a well deserved 3rd place.

Also in the
Novice Mens Middleweights was Johnathan Glennon in his third tournament. He fought his was through to the final where he came up against Blake Collins. The final was the best fight of the day going through rounds with Blake Collins emerging victorius leaving
Johnathan with second place.

The IKKU who hosted the tournament also awarded Johnathan Glennon the Most Spirited fighter award.

Another good day for the IKK.

The IKK held its annual clicker tournament on Saturday 7th February 2015 in St.Marys College in Galway.

This year saw entries from all IKK dojos. With just over 90 competitors in 4 categories it promised to be an exciting day of fighting.

For the uninitiated Clicker is a form of non contact continuous points competition. The points scored are tallied on hand held clicker counter thus the title of the competition.

We started, as ever, almost on time at 11.20am with the fighting being held over two mat areas.
Our table officials and referees ensured the day went smoothly and before long we were down to the finals. Each year the standard improves across all 4 categories and this year was no exception. Results below.
