Osu

On behalf of Shihan Kevin and all of the Instructors of the IKK I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the members and their families and peaceful and merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New year.

Our thanks to you all for your continued support of our clubs, our fighters and our organisation. 2014 was a very successful year but we will not rest on past successes, rather we will build on them in 2015 and the coming years.

Next year looks to be one of the busiest ever on many levels. There are some exciting events on the horizon for our Juniors, Cadets and Seniors alike. We will have more information on these in the new year.

Happy Holidays

The IKK held the second of its national gradings for 2014 in Gaelic Street dojo over the weekend of the 12th and 13th December. Over the course of the weekend we had four people attempting 2nd kyu, two people attempting Shodan and two people attempting Nidan.

The Friday night was for Dan grade candidates only. The temperature had dropped to -4 so the venue was very cold. With this in mind Shihan Kevin Callan, who was assisted by Sensei Shane Lalor, ensured everyone was suitably warmed up. Most of Friday night was spent on the Physical test along with many technical aspects.

On Saturday they were joined by the rest of the grading candidates and approximately 15 others who had come along to train. Everyone was put through their paces with emphasis Kihon in the morning and on Kata and Renraku in the afternoon, finishing with an hour of Kumite.

At the end of the day Shihan Kevin was please to announce the promotion to 2nd Kyu of:

Cathal Collins
Cian MacCoille
Marcin Bocenek
Emilia Cahill

Also promoted were the IKKs newest Senpais:

Sebastian Sikora
Marek Bezdziecki

And our newest Nidans:

Bartek Calka
Ciaran Stapleton

Congratulations to all who were successful.

IFK European Open Knockdown Tournament 2014

The IFK held its European Open Knockdown tournament in Samokov, Bulgaria over the weekend of the 29th and 30th of November 2014. The IKK sent two of its most experienced fighters. Senpai Dave King was entered in the mens Superheavyweights (+90kg) category and Senpai Aneta Meskauskiene was entered in the Womens Heavyweights (+65kg) category. Sensei Shane Lalor was there as a referee having travelled out a day earlier. We were staying in a Hotel in Borovets, a ski resort about 10km from the Venue.

Friday was taken up with medicals and weigh ins for Senpais Dave and Aneta. Sensei Shane attended the Referees and the Country Reps meetings. The fighting on the Saturday was the Juniors and Cadets. There were 3 Junior categories:

Aged 10 and 11
Aged 12 and 13
Aged 14 and 15

Within these categories the fighters were divided by Male and Female and also by weight meaning there were lots of categories and with almost 260 fighters from across Europe it was going to be a long day especially for the Referees and Judges. The fighting was fast and furious though there were the inevitable delays in getting the head gear and Body armor on the juniors. It was after eight O'Clock when the trophies were awarded to the very worthy winners.

Sunday was the turn of the Seniors and our two fighters. Senpai Dave was drawn against old foe Nikolai Maslennikov from Russia. They have fought twice before with Nikolai coming out on top both times courtesy of a decision. To say that Senpai Dave was eager to fight would be an understatement. Both fighters went toe to toe over four minutes with the decision going to Nikolai who went on to win the Tournament.

Senpai Aneta was next up and fought Kirsten Galatius Smith of the BKK in her opening fight. They have fought before with Senpai Aneta winning on decision. This time after a hard fought four minutes the decision once again went Senpai Anetas way.
Next up in the Semi Final she fought
Mariya Panova of Russia. Again this went four minutes with the decision going to Aneta on weight. Aneta was now in her second final in Bulgaria having fought here in the KWU world Tournament final in 2013. Her opponent would be Svetlana Tuchkova from Russia. The first three minute round was even so they went a further two minutes. Twenty seconds from the end of the round Svetlana pulled a Jodan Hiza Geri from nowhere knocking down Aneta. To her credit she regained her fighting position immediately but with time running out she was unable to balance the scores. So another major tournament and another trophy for Aneta.

All that was left was the sayonara party and the trip home. Another successful tournament for the IFK and the IKK participants.

Report: Rob Mulligan and Alan Walsh (Swords Dojo)

(Editors note: Apologies for the delay in posting this - Rob and Al provided this report some time back but I am only now getting round to adding it - mea culpa.)

On the 26th of September the IKK held its biannual summer course in Mulranny Co Mayo. The event
was attended by karateka from all over the world with varying levels of skill from beginners to 7th
Dan. Registration was at 15:30 on the Friday. The atmosphere was a mixture of excitement and a touch of nerves. After
registration was completed we congregated outside of the hotel and then went down to the coast where
Shihan  Liam Keaveney 7th Dan and Shihan Kevin Callan 6th Dan kicked things off.

We started off running in wet sand for a warm up. As the tide came back in we moved off the sand onto
solid land.Where we worked on fitness and kihon(after all as Bruce Lee once said "I don't fear the man who
has practised 10,000 techniques, I fear the man who has practised one technique 10,000 times"). So after
numerous punches, kicks, blocks, push ups and squats Friday came to an end.By this point the atmosphere
was noticeably different the excitement was till there but the nerves had been replaced by a feeling of joy.

Training started again on Sat at 06:00. We started with some kihon before running laps up and down a
stretch of the mountains. It was a magical feeling training for something you love in breathtaking
surroundings.

After the morning session we took a short break for breakfast. Our next seession was to be held back on
the coast but unfortunatly the weather was too bad, we ventured into the loacal town to a local dojo. While
there we got divided into two groups. One group went with Shihan Kevin for a national grading. The
other group stayed with Shihan Liam where we focused on stretching, partner training and bunkai. There was a lot taught and a lot learned.

After which we broke for some lunch, once everyuone had eaten and had a short rest it was off to westport
for Sensei Patrick English and Senpai Dave King's 20 man kumite and Senpai Alan McCoy's 10 man kumite. During the
event everyuone was excited and nervous even if they were not taking part they felt the nerves of their
comrades. Everyone knew the risks involved and realised someone could be seriously hurt.

The 3 fighters put in an amazing amount of effort both on the day and the months before hand (technically
years). They poured their kokoruo and rei into it.Sensei Patrick and Senpai David were succesfull in their
endeavors. Unfortunately Senpai Alan McCoy fought hard but it wasn't to be at this time.

The next part of the day we were instructed to wrap up and prepare for kumite practise. Everyone fought 1
minute fights in rotation for approximately 30 minutes. By the end we had all recieved
knocks, bumps, bruises and cuts but morale had increased.A great way to finish Saturday off.

The following morning we were given the privalege of a lie in till 07:00 at this point we returned to the
mountains for more Kihon. We also got a chance to see a new kata created by Anthony Walsh for his
showdown grading. We then moved back out to the coast, this time the tide being in wasn't an obstacle
instead we used it to our avantage and trained in the water. At first everyone was apprehensive about
getting in the water. As Shihan Liam had us doing basics up and down the sand. Everytime
edging closer to the water.Upon enetering the water we continued doing Kihon, runing parallel to the beach
chanting an old Japanese Karate chant. Considering everyone was extremley tired by this point, there was
no hesitation from anyone putting in 110 percent into the kumite that followed. This is the essence of
Kyokushin at it's finest. We finished off in the water with a bit of mokuso to reflect on the weekend and
where we want to be in the future.

We emerged from the water where Shihan Liam gave us his final speech and words of wisdom
including thanking everyone who partook in the course including Sensei Shane Lalor who was not in
attendance but put a lot of work in behind the scenes. It was during this that Shihan announced a new Sandan for the IKK.
Anthony Walsh had passed his grading and now has the title of Sensei It was great news to hear and ensured everyone remained on a high. Everyone retired to the hotel to rest together before their long journey home .

At this point there was a strong feeling of unity. We all felt united under the one banner.

One world,One Kyokushin
