Shihan Liam
Keaveney 5th Dan returned to our shores for an open course in Galway Dojo on
the weekend of the 14th to the 16th November. For those of you who don’t
know Shihan Liam is the Life President of the IKK, Chairman of the BKK and
Secretary General of the IFK. He was assisted in this course by Sensei Kevin
Callan 4th Dan. There were students in attendance from all dojos in the IKK.
The Friday night session was for seniors only and consisted of some unique
stretching exercises and plenty of Kihon. This session lasted two hours and
had about fifteen participants.
The next morning approximately twenty-five more students joined the tired and
sore seniors and Shihan and Sensei continued in the same vein as the previous
night. After a brief break for lunch and a high grades meeting the course
resumed in the afternoon with greater emphasis on Clicker and Kata. The
afternoon session lasted about three hours with Shihan demonstrating many
Kata applications and self defence techniques.
At the end of the session Shihan and Sensei issued the outstanding Dan
certificates to our more recent Dan grades. There was a surprise in store for
two of our Sensei’s, Ken and Shane, both of whom had represented the
IKK at the World Kata tournament in Poland in October 2003. Shihan Liam
announced the promotion of both men to the grade of Yondan (4th Dan).
Promotion to this grade is not dependant on a grading but is a reward for
work for Kyokushin and the IKK. Both newly promoted Sensei’s were
surprised by this promotion and more than a little emotional at this great
honour.
